What Backflow Testing Actually Involves

A backflow preventer is a mechanical assembly that stops contaminated water (from irrigation, fire lines, or industrial use) from flowing back into the public drinking water supply. Florida law requires these assemblies to be tested annually by a certified tester — because internal check valves and relief mechanisms wear out.

A proper test takes 20–40 minutes on site. We:

  • Isolate the assembly from your property's water supply
  • Attach a calibrated test kit to the assembly's test cocks
  • Verify check valves, relief valves, and air inlets meet FL code thresholds
  • Complete the official backflow test report with cert #PR14723
  • Submit to your water authority in the format they require

Assemblies We Test

RPZ (Reduced Pressure Zone)

The highest-hazard assembly — required on fire lines, commercial supply, and high-risk cross-connections. Four test cocks, two check valves, differential relief valve.

DCV (Double Check Valve)

Common on commercial irrigation and low-hazard cross-connections. Two independent check valves, four test cocks.

PVB & SVB

Pressure Vacuum Breakers and Spill-Resistant Vacuum Breakers — standard on residential irrigation. Single check valve plus air inlet.

Who Needs Annual Backflow Testing

If you own property with any of the following and you're served by North Port or Englewood water, you are almost certainly required to test annually:

  • Lawn irrigation system (most modern Florida homes)
  • Pool or spa auto-fill line
  • Fire sprinkler system
  • Commercial water service (any business)
  • Medical, dental, or restaurant water connection
  • Boiler, cooling tower, or chemical feed line
  • Dedicated irrigation meter

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does backflow testing cost in Florida?

Residential testing is flat-rate per assembly. Multi-assembly commercial and HOA properties get volume pricing. Call (941) 786-8434 for a same-day quote — no site visit needed for pricing.

How long does a backflow test take?

20 to 40 minutes for most residential assemblies. Commercial RPZ testing can run longer depending on access and assembly size. We do not require anyone to be home for most residential tests.

What if my backflow preventer fails the test?

We diagnose the failure on the spot — most commonly worn check valve springs, debris in the relief valve, or a damaged rubber seat. Most repairs can be done same-day with parts on our truck, which means you avoid a re-inspection fee.

Do I have to be home for the backflow test?

No. As long as the assembly is accessible (not behind a locked gate), we can test, complete the report, and email your receipt without you being present.

Who submits the test report to the water authority?

We do. That is the service. North Port reports go through the city's online portal. Englewood reports are filed with Englewood Water District. You do not handle any paperwork.
